Google's Android Wear platform now available on iOS

Google announced today that Android Wear is now compatible with the iPhone 5 or later running at least IOS 8.2. An official Android Wear for ios Direct Link companion app is rolling out on the App Store today worldwide.

Android Wear for iPhone has several features familiar to Android users, including third-party watch faces, fitness tracking, notifications, Google Now and voice searches. Android Wear for iPhone will also have Google apps such as Weather and Translate preinstalled, but third-party IOS apps are not supported due to Apple's restrictions.
Google has attempted to work around Apple's limitations, but Android Wear for iPhone still has some locked-down functionality compared to what is possible with a paired Android smartphone. Rich notifications, for example, are only supported for a handful of stock Google apps, while the selection of watch faces is limited due to the lack of third-party app support.

Newer Android Wear Watches Now Work On iOS:

once you’ve paired your watch with your iPhone (the app is compatible with the iPhone 5 and all newer iPhones as long as they run iOS 8.2 and up), the actual on-watch experience is pretty much the same as always. The app supports rich notifications from Gmail, Google Calendar and Apple Calendar, Google Now Cards, voice queries, Google Fit support, alarms, and everything else you’d expect (including support for the recently launched Translate app on Android Wear).

The app, of course, will also display notifications from all third-party iPhone apps. For now, however, users won’t be able to install any third-party watch apps from Google Play. This means you will see notifications from those apps but won’t be able to directly interact with your fitness tracker on the watch, for example. Google says it’s working on bringing third-party app support to iOS users, too, but it’s unclear when this will happen. WiFi support is also currently absent.

“Not everyone wants the same kind of smartwatch, so offering people choice is important,” Google says. That comment is clearly aimed at the Apple Watch and there is probably some truth in that. Smartwatches are, after all, at least partly fashion accessories and even though Apple offers a number of different variations of its smartwatch, they all look pretty similar in the end.

Google also notes that Android Wear supports always-on watch faces, “so you’ll never have to move your wrist to wake up your watch.” Another thinly veiled swipe at the Apple Watch.

The new app is now making its way into the App Store, so if you can’t find it just yet, give it another try in an hour or so.

Google Chrome to block auto-playing Flash ads starting September 1:

Google has a set a date of September 1 for when its Chrome browser will block all Flash content that isn't "central to the webpage." Flash content, such as ads or auto-playing videos on non-video websites, will be automatically paused by default but you can click to play them if you wish. Embedded video players on sites like YouTube and Vimeo will still work, of course.
Auto playing videos have become a bane of the internet and users all over the world are not happy.

While they might certainly help websites make more money, are the ads really working? Are people really clicking on the ads rushing to third party sites to spend money on products they didn’t want in the first place?

Indeed, many scrutinize the relevance of these ads at all. But that doesn’t matter, because it appears they are here to stay.
Google, though, has come up with a tool that might help you avoid the annoyance. The technology company has announced a new feature in Google Chrome which will only play what you are looking at and now whatever is open in the background.

“This means no more ‘Where’s that sound coming from?’ moments when an ad for instance decides to autoplay in a tab you’ve specifically opened in the background,” explains software engineer and Chrome evangelist Francois Beaufort.
Indeed, this will be a wonderful addition, particularly for people who like to have multiple windows open at the same time.

He goes on to say, “This cool feature prevents obvious user annoyance but also conserves power as Chrome will only consume power once the tab is foregrounded.”

Of course, this move is going to make web users consumers happy but probably will have the opposite effect on advertisers. A significant number of web advertisers still use Flash to make their ads. As a matter of fact, a rectn Sizmek report claims that advertisers try to delver nearly 5.4 billion Flash ads every year.

Writing on the official Google Chrome Blog, Google's Tommi Li explains that this new feature is all about battery life: Flash animations still consume a large amount of CPU time, which in turn slurps down some of your laptop's vital lithium juice. By "intelligently" pausing any Flash elements that aren't central to the surfing experience which is essentially a euphemism for "ads" mobile users may experience a non-negligible boost in battery life.

The "important plug-in content" change was rolled out to the beta channel of Google Chrome today, and will percolate down to the stable channel of Chrome "soon" probably in about six weeks.

In our brief testing, the "important plug-in content" feature seemed to do a good job of blocking Flash ads, including a Flash ad at the top of the YouTube homepage. Rather than blocking Flash elements entirely, the feature pauses the ads before they begin; you can then hit a "play" button if you want to see the ad (or if Chrome accidentally pauses the wrong Flash elements). It's not clear if the new feature blocks other Flash-based content, such as cookies.

For the first time over a billion people used Facebook on a single day, according to company founder Mark Zuckerberg.
The "milestone" was reached on Monday, when "1 in 7 people on Earth used Facebook to connect with their friends and family", he said in a post.
Facebook has nearly 1.5 billion users who log in at least once a month, but this was the most in a single day.
The company gained its billionth user in October 2012.
It was founded in 2004 by Mr Zuckerberg while he was a Harvard student.
In his post on Thursday, he predicted that Facebook's reach would continue to grow.
"This was the first time we reached this milestone, and it's just the beginning of connecting the whole world," Mr Zuckerberg wrote.
In July, Facebook claimed that over half of the world's online users visited the site at least once a month.

Founded in 2004 from a Harvard dorm room, the social networking site once was only available to college students but has grown its users over the last decade.

It's Facebook's flurry of changes and willingness to experiment with its features that has kept people on the site, some analysts say.

Sometimes the company makes a subtle change like taking an existing feature and presenting it in a different way. Other times, Facebook introduces something new such as allowing users to send money through its messaging app, said Nate Elliott, an analyst at Forrester Research.

"Big and small, they've always experimented pretty aggressively," Elliott said.

Facebook's popularity has also been a large selling point for advertisers, helping the company to rake in $4 billion in sales from April to June.

As of June, Facebook had 968 million users who logged into the site daily worldwide, according to data released when the company announced its second-quarter earnings.

"Advertisers always want to reach a mass audience. As much as they like targeting, they also like large numbers," said Debra Aho Williamson, a principal analyst for eMarketer, a market research company.

Group Feature of OneDrive going to be removed

Microsoft To Disable Groups Feature In One Drive From 16 October :

If you use Microsoft’s One Drive Groups group-collaboration feature, you’ll need to find something else soon because  Microsoft will shutter One Drive Groups on October 16th.this means that the users, who are using One Drive service for collaboration have to relocate their data to some other new location. This announcement was expected, because lately users were not able to create new groups, for months, they could only work with the existing groups.
Users using Group feature received a mail today saying that the Group feature will not be available after October 16th, 2015. The more important notification was that any data stored in the group will be deleted. If you want to stop your data from deleting, then you have to follow these steps to relocate the data to other folder in One Drive. This process is pretty simple and in normal word it means that you are downloading your file and then uploading it to OneDrive. The mail also tells about the instruction of sharing your files and folders after moving out from the Groups. So if you are using Group features of One Drive, then kindly migrate your data to some other location before it’s too late.
If you use Office 365 Groups, you won’t be affected that feature will live on. But if you rely on OneDrive Groups, similar services from other companies might be worth trying, such as Dropbox’s shared folders feature and Google Drive’s shared documents feature. If you rely on One Drive Groups, take a look around at your other options and give them a try now, before One Drive Groups go away for good.

Apple is offering free camera replacements on some iPhone 6 Plus units due to blurry photos:

If you bought an iPhone 6 Plus between September 2014 and January 2015, you could be eligible to get your back camera replaced.

According to a new support page on Apple’s website, certain handsets that were sold during this time had rear cameras that with a potentially faulty component, causing photos to come out blurry. Apple is offering a free rear camera replacement on any affected iPhone 6 Plus with an eligible serial number at any Apple store or authorized service provider. The iSight Camera Replacement Program will cover iPhone 6 Plus cameras for three years after the first retail sale of the unit. Microsoft releases Windows Server 2016 Technical Preview 3

Nearly three months after the release of its previous version, Microsoft has finally released the update to Windows Server, dubbed as Windows Server 2016 Technical Preview 3. Last week, the ISO files of this build leaked online, soon after, screenshots of build 10514 emerged as well, leading to the official release of the long-awaited update today.
Microsoft also published the release notes of Windows Server Technical Preview 3, which includes Windows Server Containers which are an isolated, resource-controlled, and portable operating environment. Furthermore, the update also contains Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) and Active Directory Federation Services (AD FS), which will help organizations provide better identity management experiences on devices as well as configure the latter to improve authentication techniques.

Changes have also been made to Hyper-V or Scale-out File Server failover cluster so that it can now easily be upgraded without any downtime. Microsoft has also improved the Windows Server Antimalware , support for OpenGL and OpenCL applications MultiPoint Services has been integrated into Remote Desktop Services for Windows Server Technical Preview. Improvements have also been made to File and Storage Services, Web Application Proxy, Windows PowerShell 5.0 and Networking.

You can download Windows Server 2016 Technical Preview right now, but as with any preview software release, the company advises that you only install it in a testing environment .

Google introduces Street View maps of Pakistan’s historic sites

Today, Google launched a special project for Pakistan to highlight and promote the country’s cultural heritage with its trademark Street View maps.

Named as “Google Cultural Institute Pakistan,” the project currently features over a dozen historical landmarks to view in 360 degree street level imagery, with 10 or more place having picture collection.

The geographic area where Pakistan is situated today has a rich history that can be traced back to more than 5000 years. There is plenty of evidence from the pre-historic and historic period that supports this claim showing how much diversified their cultural heritage is.

Just to give you an idea, 14 millions years old fossil jaws of apes found from Pothohar belong to a species named “Sivapithecus Pakininsis,” said to be the ancestor of Man.

Trading cities including Mohenjo Daro and Harappa were two of the largest cities of the ancient Indus Valley Civilization, which are considered among the world’s earliest major urban settlements, contemporaneous with the civilizations of ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, Crete, and Norte Chico.

Further, the region has witnessed variety of migrants including Aryans, Persians, Greeks, Arabs and Mughals who built tremendous historical monuments throughout the locations that are today in Pakistan.

The latest initiative is all about preserving this heritage and showcasing Pakistan’s finest cultural treasures to the people beyond its boundaries.

The project was started back in 2012, after the Internet giant signed an agreement with the Punjab government to capture historical locations and cultural sites in the province. Now, they have decided to encompass their stance including locations all over the country.

The collection is called “Wonders of Pakistan,” which currently lists 467 different items, with ancient relics, paintings, and old coins all part of the package.

Samsung unveiled 16 Tb SSD :Future of SSD's

Samsung made the world's largest hard drive, with nearly 16TB of storage:

There's a thing called the Flash Memory Summit in California, because of course there is. And there, Golem.de reports, Samsung has introduced the PM1633a. It's a terrible name for a wonderful thing: the world's largest hard drive, packed into a 2.5-inch case. It's listed as 16TB (technically, it's 15.36TB), and the best part about it is that it's a solid state drive using Samsung's new 256GB NAND flash as the basis for the storage. As Ars Technica reports, that new flash memory is the key to stuffing more storage capacity into the same space, and it works by stacking the transistors vertically.

When we saw the news this morning, a debate ensued inside The Verge offices about whether or not it was accurate to call this thing a hard drive. "Hard drive" is usually shorthand for "hard disk drive," and therefore has built into its name the idea of spinning magnetic platters. But this is an SSD, so if you want to be that person who pushes their glasses up and #actuallys about it, you could argue that it's not technically a hard drive. But really, we all just think of a hard drive as the component where you store stuff on a computer, and this PM1633a can store more stuff than anything else. Hence, the headline you see above.

No pricing has been announced, but it'll be expensive, and it's safe to assume it'll be sold primarily to enterprise customers for use in servers. In fact, Samsung was touting a reference design for a server with 48 of these hard drives installed, which adds up to a total capacity of 768TB. Samsung called it "JBOF," which stands for "Just a Bunch Of Flash." Maybe let's just leave this whole "what is a hard drive, really?" debate aside and start using JBOF instead

Development began soon after the release of Grand Theft Auto IV and was shared between many of Rockstar's studios worldwide. The development team drew influence from many of their previous projects such as Red Dead Redemptionand Max Payne 3, and designed the game around three lead protagonists to innovate on the core structure of its predecessors. Creating the open world constituted much of the development work, and several team members conducted field research around California to capture footage for the design team. The game's soundtrack features anoriginal score composed by a team of producers who collaborated over several years.

A widely anticipated game, Grand Theft Auto V broke industry sales records and became the fastest-selling entertainment product in history, earning US $800 million in its first day and US $1 billion in its first three days. It received widespread critical acclaim, with praise directed at its multiple protagonist design, open world, presentation and gameplay. The game caused controversies related to its depiction of women and a mission featuring torture during a hostage interrogation. Considered one of the most significant titles of the seventh generation of console gaming, the game won year-end accolades, including Game of the Year awards from several gaming publications. It has shipped over 54 million copies and is one of the best-selling video games of all time.

Download Firefox version 40

Firefox has hit a new landmark today with the release of version 40. The biggest change is improved Windows 10 compatibility, though previous versions of Firefox certainly work fine with Microsoft's new OS. Instead, the changes are mostly aesthetic to bring the browser in line with Windows 10's design and make it easier to use on a touchscreen. For instance, the "close" buttons on tabs are now bigger so that they're easier to use on a touchscreen, and the address bar has bigger fonts. It also has revised tab strips and toolbar plus a custom Windows 10 theme.

Other new features focus on security, including extra protection against risky downloads and warnings for unsigned extensions (they'll be blocked completely in Firefox 41). It's also bring better support for your computer's graphics, which will result in smoother scrolling and animations. Unfortunately, the new version is still 32-bit and not 64-bit, with no word on when that's going to change. The updates are being pushed to all browsers over the next few days, but if you're feeling impatient, you can grab it here.

Just Cause 2 is a 2010 open world action-adventure video game developed by Avalanche Studios, published by Eidos Interactive and distributed by Square Enix. It is the sequel to the 2006 video game Just Cause.

Just Cause 2 employs the Avalanche Engine 2.0, an updated version of the engine used in Just Cause. The game is set on the fictional island of Panau, which is located in Southeast Asia and covers 400 square miles (1,000 km2) of land.Rico Rodriguez returns as the protagonist, aiming to overthrow the evil dictator Pandak "Baby" Panay and confront his former mentor, Tom Sheldon.

Upon release, Just Cause 2 was met with positive critical reaction, with praise being directed at the game's open-ended nature, world design, soundtrack and gameplay mechanics, as well for being an improvement over its predecessor. Criticism was directed at the game's story and voice acting. Just Cause 2 was also a commercial success, selling over 6 million copies as of September 2013.

Just Cause 2 is going to be included with Just Cause 3 on Xbox One, however it is not known if the this is a backwards compatible version or a direct port.

Don't get fooled into clicking phony Windows 10 upgrade emails

If you’re still waiting for your reservation to come up as Microsoft rolls out Windows 10, we can’t blame you for being eager to get your virtual hands on Microsoft’s latest OS. But if you get an email encouraging you upgrade to Windows 10, you’ll want to exercise a little caution, lest you get taken by scammers.

A post published to Cisco Systems’s company blog outlines how scammers are taking advantage of Windows 10’s launch to push ransomware onto unsuspecting PC users.  At first glance, the emails look reasonably legit: Cisco notes that scammers are spoofing the sender’s email address to make it look as if the message is from Microsoft. Also, the blue-and-white color scheme used in the message nearly matches the colors Microsoft is using for Windows 10 marketing materials. So unless you look carefully, you could get fooled into thinking the email is actually from Microsoft.

An attached .zip file purports to be a Windows 10 installer, but according to Cisco, the attachment contains a piece of ransomware called CTB-Locker that encrypts your files and requests payment within 96 hours, lets your files be encrypted forever.

Avoiding Windows 10 scams:

cisco recommends keeping a current backup of your files at all times—which you should be doing anyway just in case you get bitten by ransom-ware. But it’s best to avoid being taken by this malware in the first place.

First and foremost, don’t click on any attachments you weren’t expecting, and be wary of download links in email messages. Microsoft isn’t distributing Windows 10 through email attachments or links embedded in emails. Instead, your reserved copy of Windows 10 will be automatically downloaded onto your system at some point in the next few days or weeks, and you will receive a notification on your PC when it’s time to install. 

Second, Cisco points out a few quirks in the phone emails you can watch for, such as mangled characters in the body text and a spoofed message assuring you that the email message had been scanned for viruses. Cyber criminals are very adept at shifting their tactics, though, so you shouldn’t assume that an email message is safe just because it lacks these elements.

Upgrade to Windows 10 now—safely:

If you still haven’t received your reserved copy of Windows 10 and are feeling a little impatient, you can download and install Windows 10 right now. All you need is a spare USB key with at least 3GB of free space, an activated copy of Windows 7 or 8.1, and some free time. Our Mark Hachman      will show you how to go about it.

Intel's professional-grade Xeon processors are no longer confined to fancy workstations or data centers. The chip designer has unveiled its first-ever Xeon processor family for laptops, the E3-1500M v5. The Skylake-based part is meant to deliver the kind of heavy lifting that you'd want as a pro (such as rendering 3D models or crunching big data sets) while giving you a laptop that's still thin and light enough to carry around. It has Xeon mainstays like error-correcting memory and remote management, but it also rolls in support for brand new features that any self-respecting techie would like, such as the new Thunderbolt 3 connector. If you want, you can drive dual 4K displays, USB-C devices and more from a single port.

The semiconductor firm isn't talking about everything the E3-1500M can do just yet, and you won't the chips in shipping laptops until the fall. However, their existence shows that even the high-end computing world is affected by the shift from desktops to laptops. As IDC notes, the mobile workstation market is one of the few areas where Windows PC sales are growing -- it only makes sense for Intel to court the increasing numbers of creatives and engineers that want to do their jobs away from the office.

Duolingo :

 Duolingo is a free language-learning platform that includes a language-learning app along with a crowd sourced text translation platform, and a language proficiency assessment center. Duolingo is ad-free and users are not charged for its services. The language-learning app offers over 40 different language courses across 23 languages, and is available on iOS, Android and Windows Phone 8.1 platforms with over 100 million registered users across the world.
The project was started in Pittsburgh by Carnegie Mellon University professor Luis von Ahn (creator of reCAPTCHA) and his graduate student Severin Hacker, and then developed along with Antonio Navas, Vicki Cheung, Marcel Uekermann, Brendan Meeder, Hector Villafuerte, and Jose Fuentes The project was originally sponsored by Luis von Ahn's MacArthur fellowship and a National Science Foundation grant. Additional funding was later received in the form of investments from Union Square Ventures and actor Ashton Kutcher's firm A-Grade Investments.

Duolingo started its private beta on 30 November 2011 and accumulated a waiting list of more than 300,000 users. On 19 June 2012, Duolingo launched for the general public. Due to popular interest, Duolingo has received many investments including $20 million Series C round of investment led by Kleiner Caufield & Byers. Duolingo has 42 staff members, of whom many were Google employees, and operates from an office in the Pittsburgh neighborhood of Shadyside near Carnegie Mellon's campus
On 13 November 2012 Duolingo released their iOS app through the iTunes App Store. The application is a free download and is compatible with most iPhone, iPod and iPad devices. On 29 May 2013, Duolingo released their Android app, which was downloaded over a million times in the first three weeks and quickly became the #1 education app in the Google Play store. Duolingo then released both a Google Glass App (glassware) and support for Android Wear.
